East West Rail is a new railway connecting communities between Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge. It will make journeys simpler, quicker and more reliable. That means more employment, education and housing options within easy reach, giving people more opportunities to live and work in the area.
For people in Cambridge, East West Rail means more than just new rail services. A new station for Cambourne, a new eastern entrance to Cambridge station and a new Cambridge East station will transform how people travel around the area, cutting commuting times, taking cars off the roads and delivering a huge boost to the economy.
The benefits of EWR in Cambridgeshire
For the first time in decades, communities to the east of Cambridge will have their very own station, linking into the city in just five minutes and easing pressure on Cambridge station. Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access the new station easily via upgraded routes that link up with existing and proposed footpaths and cycleways in the area.
Cambourne will join the rail network for the first time, with a new station connecting the community into Cambridge and the wider region. This means people living in Cambourne will now be able to commute into Cambridge by train, with journeys taking around 15 minutes instead of up to 50 minutes on Cambridge’s congested roads.
An eastern entrance at the station will open up the possibility for a whole new quarter to the city, with improved access and connectivity on the Clifton Road side. Bridging together the two sides of the city via the station will also make it easier for people to move around, especially at peak times.
Connecting Cambridge to the west via a reliable and efficient rail network will allow people to buy more affordable housing outside of the city, but still commute in for jobs and leisure. East West rail will make Cambridge one of the best connected cities in the UK.
