East West Rail line to pilot groundbreaking 5G connectivity rollout

Back to Latest stories

A project to deliver 5G on trains will be introduced on a section of track that will eventually form part of the East West Rail route connecting Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge.

England’s Connected Heartland (ECH) has teamed up with telecommunications specialists AWTG to install a cutting-edge 5G Mobile Private Network on track between Bicester and Bletchley. This will not only benefit passengers, but also lineside neighbours who will have the opportunity to access this high speed network. This pioneering pilot aims to set a national precedent, demonstrating how advanced wireless technology can enhance onboard Wi-Fi and improve operational efficiency across the UK’s rail network.

“We are delighted that a section of our new railway has been chosen to pilot this exciting new scheme. East West Rail is all about economic growth, it’s about supporting businesses and obviously enhanced wifi connectivity is crucial to that, so we are really pleased to be involved in this roll out of 5G connectivity. It absolutely fits with the vision and purpose of East West Rail.” David Hughes, CEO of East West Rail

Funding for this project has been provided by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. Work on this transformative project is set to begin immediately, paving the way for a new era of rail travel.
