Environmental protection is at the heart of decision making here at East West Railway Company. Our colleagues and partners are committed to making choices which benefit the environment and biodiversity, so we’re pleased to see them scooping up some deserved recognition at a series of recent environmental awards.

East West Rail Alliance collect Green Apple Award

The Green Apple Environment Awards were launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation and have become well established as one of the most popular environmental campaigns in the world. The annual international awards recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

East West Rail Alliance Director, Mark Cuzner, said:

"Congratulations to our Environment & Sustainability team and everyone else who has contributed to our efforts to ensure the project achieves its environmental commitments. Awards such as this demonstrate that our strategy, approach and implementation is recognised as best practice."

East West Rail and Arup ‘highly commended’ in TechFest Awards

As the UN Biodiversity Conference gets underway in Montreal, we’re delighted to receive recognition for our efforts to build biodiversity net gain into our designs. Alongside our partners at Arup, we were highly commended by a panel of expert industry leading judges in the Design Efficiency category of New Civil Engineer’s prestigious TechFest Awards 2022. The award recognises the development of a pioneering approach that utilises survey information and remote-sensed data to enable the mapping of ecological habitats, allowing for better environmental design from the outset.

 The TechFest judging panel said:

“It was felt that the entry highlighted an important but potentially overlooked element of civil engineering projects and the use of technology both elevates the importance of biodiversity in design solutions but also ensures it is captured at the front end of projects to force consideration of environmental factors in planning and executing civil engineering projects. The judges felt this could potentially have a major impact on future designs.”

And the award for excellence in sustainable infrastructure goes to…

East West Rail Alliance alongside landscape partners at RSK Group for works involving Ecological Compensation Sites (ECS).

The Landscape Institute Awards celebrates outstanding projects which combat climate change, support health and wellbeing, promote biodiversity and “levelling up” local spaces on a global scale.

The judges commented:

"This is an intelligent approach and response, blending and augmenting the best parts of a ruderal landscape with the functional and practical needs of the railway. Good example of developing infrastructure for the local community and also caring for the natural environment. A long-term approach with significant pre-construction activity and an ongoing management plan. This is a very forward thinking approach to maximising sustainability impact and minimising risks through infrastructure development, with thought put into achieving value throughout the asset lifecycle."
